Problems: Are you
having a difficult time opening file extension BAK files?
These files are created by various programs as well as the
operating system. One program can open its own BAK files yet
may have trouble opening a different program’s BAK file.
It’s possible that you don’t have the appropriate program
for opening BAK files installed on your PC or that you have
a registry-related error. BAK files are typically backups
made by an application and if the application is not
installed, you may not be able to open the file. To rule out
a registry error, run our free registry scan.
Manual Removal
Instructions: To manually remove a BAK file, right-click the
Start button and click on Explore. Once in Windows Explorer,
select the drive you’d like to search and then go to the
Search bar. Type in: *.BAK
Your computer will now
search the drive for any BAK files and then list them. Find
the BAK file you want to delete and right-click the file. A
menu will open. Click Delete. Windows will ask you if you
are sure you want to send the BAK file to the Recycle Bin.
If you’re sure, click on Yes.
Solution/Recommendations: If you are having trouble with the
file extension BAK files or applications that made the BAK
file, make sure you are running the latest version of the
software. Because so many different programs create BAK
files, make sure you are using the correct program when
attempting to open the file. For example, if your BAK file
is related to your banking software, use your banking
software application to open the BAK file, not your word
processor.
Update your software
by going to the manufacturer’s website and downloading the
latest updates and patches. These fixes are often released
to repair known issues with the application. In addition,
because BAK file corruption and missing file associations
can often be linked to registry-related errors, we highly
recommend a registry scan to rule out potential problems
with the registry itself.
In addition, beware of
file extension BAK files sent over email as they can contain
viruses or other malicious programs.
