Description: MPEG-4 Audio File – The file extension M4A
files are audio files that use the MPEG-4 audio compression
as well as the same compression as .MP4 video files however
they do not contain a video track. In other words, M4A files
are the audio layer (without the video) of MPEG 4 movies.
M4A audio files with copyright protection (such as files you
bought from the iTunes Music Store) usually have with the
.M4P file extension.
M4A is emerging as the new standard for audio file
compression. Other terms for this format include Apple
Lossless Encoder or ALE. This new codec provides lossless
encoding with fewer storage space needs.

Problems: Are you having a difficult time opening file
extension M4A files? It’s possible that you don’t have the
appropriate program for opening M4A files installed on your
PC or that you have a registry-related error. M4A files
require a media player such as Windows Media Player or Apple
QuickTime Player in order to open properly. To rule out a

Manual Removal Instructions: To manually remove a file
extension M4A file, right-click the Start button and click
on Explore to open up Windows Explorer. On the left,
double-click the drive you’d like to search for M4A file
extensions. Next, go up to the Search bar and type in: *.M4A
This will tell Windows to search for any file extension of
.M4A. Windows will display a list of all M4A files found on
the drive. Navigate to the specific M4A file that you want
to delete. Right-click on the M4A file and click on Delete.
When asked if you are sure you want to send the M4A file to
the Recycle Bin, click on Yes.
Solution/Recommendations: If you are having trouble with the
M4A files or applications, make sure you are running the
latest version of the media player. Updates and patches are
often released that address known issues with the
application.
If you purchased your M4A files from iTunes or some other
marketplace, you may need to register for an account and
register the files to a particular computer or device. Check
with the iTunes Music Store or other seller for details.
In addition, M4A file corruption and missing M4A file
associations can often be linked to registry-related errors.
Because of this, we highly recommend a registry scan to rule
out potential M4A file extension problems with the registry
itself.

but are still having trouble opening M4A files, go back into
Windows Explorer and right-click on the M4A file you’d like
to open. Click on Open With and then select Choose Default
Program. Windows will display a list of recommended
programs. If the compatible media player you want to use is
listed, click on the related icon. To always open M4A files
with this program, be sure to mark the box that says,
“Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.”
