File Extension RAR
Name: RAR or .rar
Description: WinRAR
Compressed Archive – RAR compression is a type of technology
that uses a higher compression ratio than the typical ZIP
compression found in WinZIP. A file with a RAR file
extension represents a file or a group of files that have
been compressed with the RAR compression by programs such as
WinRAR or Stuffit Expander. In addition, the RAR compressor
also creates spanned archives that are split across several
files. These file extension RAR files can have extensions
from .R00 to .R99 or they may all have the standard .RAR
file extension.
RAR stands for "Roshal
ARchive", a nod to the developer of the RAR compression
algorithm, Eugene Roshal.

Window Explorer has opened click the drive you want to
search in the left side of the screen and then go to the
Search bar and type in: *.RAR
Windows will search
the drive you selected for any file ending with the RAR file
extension and display a list of all RAR files it finds. In
addition, you may need to search for *.R00 through *.R99 in
order to eliminate all related RAR files. You can start by
typing in: *.R??
This will search for
any file with an extension that starts with the letter “R”
and contains three characters.
Windows will display a
list of all RAR files found on the drive. Find the RAR that
you want to delete, right-click it, and then choose Delete.
Confirm your decision to send the RAR file to the Recycle
Bin by clicking on Yes.
Solution/Recommendations: If you are experiencing problems
with RAR files or related RAR applications, make sure you
are running the latest version of the software. Check WinRAR
for updates or patches that may repair known issues with the
application. In addition, RAR file corruption and missing
RAR file associations can often be linked to
registry-related errors. Because of this, we highly
recommend a registry scan to rule out potential problems
with the registry itself.
If you have WinRAR or
Stuffit Expander installed on your PC but still can’t open
RAR files, go back into Windows Explorer and right-click on
the RAR file you’d like to open. Click on Open With and then
click on Choose Default Program. A list of recommended
programs should appear. If either WinRAR or Stuffit Expander
or listed, click on the corresponding icon. Check the box
that says, “Always use the selected program to open this
kind of file.”
