Description: Microsoft Works spreadsheet or chart. Microsoft Works is a program of basic productivity tools including a word processing program and a spreadsheet program. Spreadsheets made using Microsoft Works are saved with the XLR file extension.

Author: Microsoft Corporation

Category: Data file

File Type: Data file

Problems: Are you having a difficult time opening XLR files? It’s possible that you don’t have the Microsoft Works installed on your PC or that you have a registry-related error. XLR files require a compatible software application such as Microsoft Works or Microsoft Excel installed on your computer in order to open properly. To rule out a registry error, run our free registry scan.

Manual Removal Instructions: To manually remove a XLR file, right-click the Start button and click on Explore. This step opens up Windows Explorer. Find your hard drive in the list on the left side and double-click it. Next, go to the Search bar and type in: *.XLR

Windows will search your hard drive for all files ending with the XLR file extension. Once the list of XLR files is displayed, choose the specific XLR file you’d like to delete and right-click it. Click Delete from the menu and then click on Yes when asked if you are sure you want to send the XLR file to the Recycle Bin.

Solution/Recommendations: If you are having trouble with the File Extension XLR or the Microsoft Works applications, make sure you are running the latest version of MS Works. Microsoft patches and updates their software regularly fixing known problems with the various applications.

In addition, XLR file corruption and missing file associations can often be linked to registry-related errors. Because of this, we highly recommend a registry scan to rule out potential problems with the registry itself.

If you have Microsoft Works installed on your PC and are still having trouble opening XLR files, go back into Windows Explorer and right-click on the XLR file you’d like to open. Click on Open With and then click on Choose Default Program. A list of recommended programs will be displayed. If Microsoft Works is listed, click the appropriate MS Works icon or link. Next, place a check mark in the check box that says, “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.”
